Patrick Mathews was born in Fairfax, Virginia but moved from place to place throughout his early years. Always encouraged by his parents, he started drawing from a very early age after being introduced to comic books and skateboarding. He went to the College of William and Mary to study architecture
but later he found art and illustration to be his true passion. He ended up dropping out of school and shortly after, he moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in illustration. He later entered into the video game industry as a concept/production artist where he still works today.
While still in school, Patrick tried his hand at many disciplines including screen printing, lithography, relief printing, and intaglio. He has a love for printmaking as a craft and art and those processes and ideas influence his approach to all of his work. His current body of work draws inspiration from skateboard and tattoo imagery, which have been a constant throughout his life. Patrick was a member of the Safehouse Studios and currently works out of studio space in the Mission District in San Francisco.
